Emily Blunt and James McAvoy were among the many actors speaking out in an effort to save the UK Film Council. It was announced last month that the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) plans to axe the organisation in order to establish “a direct and less bureaucratic relationship with the British Film Institute”. However, the actors insisted that the UKFC is vital to helping those in the film industry establish their careers. “We all owe any success we have had in our acting careers, to varying degrees, to films supported by the UK Film Council. But it is not out of personal gratitude that we are dismayed that the UKFC is facing the axe; it is because we fear the impact on the British film industry as a whole,” they wrote in a joint letter published in The Daily Telegraph. TV, film and theatre stars last night demanded the Tories scrap plans to ditch the UK Film Council. More than 50 household names including Emily Blunt, James McAvoy and Bill Nighy warned it would not just harm the economy but the “whole British film industry”. In a joint letter, they wrote that David Cameron’s decision to axe the council as part of his savage costcutting drive threatened a “British success story”. They said the expertise of camera crews, lighting experts and set builders was the reason so many top Hollywood directors chose to make films here. And they pointed out the industry made money for Britain, bringing in £5 for every £1 invested. The letter said: “Everyone knows that times are tough. But the UKFC doesn’t waste money, it makes it. Thanks to its efforts, our film industry, worth £4.5billion a year, has rarely been stronger.” The Government’s plans have provoked outrage, with 42,000 people signing a Facebook petition. Since the UKFC was established in 2000, British films have laid claim to 23% of box office takings. It is responsible for some of the most successful UK hits including In the Loop, Bend it Like Beckham and Gosford Park. Last year it received £63.3million income from the Lottery and grant-in-aid. Axing it would save just £3million a year. Source: Mirror UK I’ve added new high quality candids of Emily Blunt visits a friends in West Hollywood on July 31, 2010. GALLERY LINK:
Emily Blunt, who plays a ballet dancer in her latest film, not only had to contend with the difficult task of learning how to pirouette (for her upcoming role in The Adjustment Bureau, alongside Matt Damon) – she also had to cope with burger envy too. Wearing a sultry lace outfit on the cover of UK Elle, in its September issue, the British newlywed said watching her co-star eat fast food in front of her was torturous. “This is my weekend of revenge on the diet I’ve had to be on for the re-shoots,” she confessed, enjoying a Dr Funk cocktail. “Last night I had steamed pork buns that made me want to weep,” she confessed, adding: “I feel like I’m just emerging from a food coma.” Despite being based in Los Angeles, retaining her quirky Britishness is not something she has to work on. In fact, she’s more likely to be found slathering Marmite (the quintessentially British yeast spread) on buttery toast than she is slurping a detox juice. “I’m not on cleanses or doing Pilates every day! Not to stereotype Hollywood girls, but…” And in case we needed more convincing of the 27-year-old’s down-to-earth nature, it turns she has an aversion to digital airbrushing, stating candidly: “I don’t like it when they stretch you out and make you all long and skinny. It makes you look like a Barbie. Who the hell looks like that?” We couldn’t agree more. – Monique Jessen Source: People
Blunt — perhaps as a result of her side-splitting and pitch-perfect turn as the world’s bitchiest assistant in The Devil Wears Prada or perhaps it’s the fact that she recently wed adorable everyman actor Jon Krasinski — is probably one of our favorite actresses in Hollywood. It helps that her red carpet style is almost flawless. Which is why it’s refreshing to hear her speak out against airbrushing. She told Elle UK:
