Emily Blunt Films The Young Victoria

I loved Emily Blunt before, but now that she’s marrying John Krasinski, I love her even more. And I’m pretty excited to see her as Queen Victoria in The Young Victoria. And I give her a lot of credit for wearing the period costumes!

I personally have never worn a really tight corset and can’t really imagine myself ever wearing one. But when you’re playing a role in a period piece, sometimes the costumes you wear are quite authentic and Emily Blunt says the corsets she had to wear in The Young Victoria were tight beyond belief. She says, “I learned how to survive when they lace you tight. It takes getting used to. You must inhale so your rib cage expands. This way, after you’re all done up you can have room to breathe.”Ahh! I can’t imagine not being able to breathe and having to use my acting skills. So, I totally get why Emily says, “After a day’s shooting, I’d instantly put on sweat pants. I needed something comfy. I needed to feel my inner organs working again!” Most of us love putting sweat pants on after a long day of work, so you can imagine how gratifying it is after wearing a too-tight corset all day.

However, there are some pluses to period pieces. And that includes no heel wearing! Emily says, “We wore flats under those huge, voluminous gowns, which, in fact, they actually did in the early period. They wore ballet boots.” A corset and high hells probably would have been way too much to handle.

Now when we’re watching The Young Victoria, we’re going to have a whole lot of sympathy for Emily Blunt. Then again, she’s marrying John Krasinski, so we don’t really feel too bad for her.
